Terry Fox was a Canadian activist who started a Marathon of Hope to raise money for Cancer research. Now, the Terry Fox run has become a vital part of the lives of people in Canada. It is a non-competitive charity event that is held annually. People participate in this run to commemorate the memory of Terry Fox and to raise funds for his noble cause. This year also, the Terry Fox run had remarkable success despite restrictions. Read on for the details:
The
Beginning
Terry Fox's
run was first organized in 1981 by Isadore Sharp, who contacted Terry in the
hospital and expressed his desire to organize a run to raise funds for cancer
research. Sharp understood the pain of cancer patients as he also lost his son
to cancer in 1979. From then on, the event is held annually on the second
Sunday after Labour Day.
Since the
beginning, the Terry Fox Foundation has managed to raise more than CA$ 750
million for the cause. The distance of the run varies between 5-15 kilometers,
and participation is more important than a win. Schools also participate with
enthusiasm in the run every year. They are usually on a shorter distance.
To honor
Terry's wishes, the run doesn't have any corporate sponsorships at all. There
are no advertisements on any of the materials associated with the race like
banners, t-shirts, etc.
The Run
in 2021
Though the
COVID-19 situation is still not good in Canada, the run was organized this year
by following the COVID-19 restrictions and taking necessary precautions. The
run turned out to be a success. About 650 communities came together for the run
on September 19, 2021. The school run was organized on September 29, 2021.
People were allowed to participate from wherever they were, around their
neighborhood, down the street, or even from their backyards.
