Netflix Games for Mobile are Hitting the Android Market

Netflix is entering the gaming arena by launching five games that will be available to play in the Android app. The plans for an iOS app are also in the works. The company announced this in a tweet and a blog. Anyone who has a Netflix subscription can download the app on their Android phone or tablet from Google Play Store from Tuesday onwards. The games have been rolled at the time of publishing, so you can play them all now.

The games are available in the main app of Netflix in a row on the homepage, or you can access them in a drop-down menu for categories or in a new games tab. All the games need to be downloaded now, but it will change in the future as some will be downloadable while others will need an internet connection. Thankfully, none of the games have an add-on fee, in-app purchases, or ads for now.

The first five games are Stranger Things 3: The Game, Stranger Things:1984, Shooting Hoops, Teeter Up, and Card Blast.

This is the latest step by Netflix to make video games a part of the standard subscriptions. The company stated in July it wants to expand into gaming. It’s the first time the company has had a meaningful move into a new kind of entertainment since the company began streaming in 2017. It had its first original show in 2012.

This new move by Netflix will also give it an edge against the new competitors like Fortnite and the old ones like YouTube. The pandemic has been good for the gaming industry, and it is now a bigger market than movies and North American sports put together. The global market for video games was estimated to be worth US$ 178 billion in 2020, and it will be more than US$ 200 in 2023, according to estimates.

In addition to Netflix, other big brands are also foraying into gaming. Amazon, which owns and operates Prime Video, has invested in Luna, a cloud gaming service, and owns a gaming studio. Even Google, the parent company of YouTube, has invested in Stadia, a game-streaming service. In addition to that, Apple, the creator of films and TV shows for Apple TV Plus, has initiated Apple Arcade.

Netflix is doing better than most competitors as it makes games a part of its only subscription. Other companies are offering gaming services as standalone products and are also bundling them with several other memberships. Netflix has also planned the future wisely as it has got broad ambitions for gaming. It wants to pursue console games for PlayStation and Xbox as well.
