Hard work pays off.  Even when you're at your lowest, just don’t give up.

Q & A With Jonathan Smith, Director and Redseal Journeyman Electrician at SKS Electrical Ltd

What services does SKS Electrical Ltd offer?

Most of our work is in the residential and commercial fields.  We start with service-call work and we also take care of any larger commercial spaces.

How did you come up with the idea to start SKS Electrical Ltd, and what purpose did you intend to serve with the concept?

I originally started the company in 2017. I had seen an opportunity to start my own company and never looked back. My biggest value is building relationships with customers, who, at any time they have any sort of electrical needs, wouldn’t hesitate to pick up the phone and contact me.

Which milestones have marked meeting benchmarks towards the fulfillment of your personal goals/ the company's vision and goals?

It’s when you end up seeing that you have been noticed by the CBRB (Canadian Business Review Board) or Best in Calgary platforms that you really just sit back for a minute in disbelief. I never could’ve even imagined anything like this when I first started out.

Which steps have you taken for the company to achieve the level of consumer trust that has been nationally recognized?

The answer is hard and honest work; I try to let my customers understand the issues they might be having, so maybe some challenges in the future can be avoided.

What part of your education or other experiences do you feel was the most helpful in preparing you for success?

I think it’s mostly how I have always been able to communicate with people that just made it that much easier.

Which strategies have you found the most effective in growing your audience/ bringing awareness of your service to a larger consumer group?

Social media was definitely the backbone of my company when I first started out, but over time, word-of-mouth has been my best source for more work.

Are there any challenges that made it difficult to continue operation and that you managed to overcome? What was your approach to get past these?

Obviously, getting through Covid was a challenge. Mostly, I just had to keep the wheels spinning and try to create more of an audience through social media and other outlets.

How do you balance work, passions/hobbies, and relationships?

When I’m at work, I’m an employee and a boss, and when I’m home, I’m a husband and father. You have to have separation between the two for success.

What are your future plans to build on your personal/ company achievements and fulfill your vision for success/ what developments can your audience or clientele look forward to expecting next?

I’m always interested in new products and how they may outperform the older ones. I like to have the right knowledge to answer customers when they ask why I choose one product or method over another.

What advice would you like to give readers that hope to achieve success in your field?

Hard work pays off.  Even when you're at your lowest, just don’t give up.
